According to the<i> New York Times<\/i>, after opening in 1952, built to carry 3,000 cars daily by 1980, the highway was serving 14,000 cars daily by 1966. Today\u2019s figures are vastly higher: the daily average is between 80,000 and 124,000 vehicles. And also as with many other highways, U.S. 36 is lined with fast food joints, shopping malls and other less-than-stellar scenery.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1100\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/U.S.-36-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1100\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/U.S.-36-2.jpg\" alt=\"U.S. 36 with buildings\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/U.S.-36-2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/U.S.-36-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/U.S.-36-2-298x223.jpg 298w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1100\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Following the lead of so many of America&#8217;s highways, the stretch of U.S. 36 between Boulder and Denver is distinctly unfriendly to any mode of transportation but the car. That&#8217;s set to change, though. From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kenlund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ken Lund<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a move that\u2019s telling of the Federal Highway Administration\u2019s evolving commitment to alternative transportation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/06\/21\/us\/a-highway-projects-focus-discouraging-driving.html?_r=2&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">U.S. 36<\/a> is getting a makeover. Many would say it\u2019s about time: the highway, which is the most efficient way to get to Denver from Boulder, was ranked as Colorado\u2019s worst \u201cheartburn highway\u201d by transportation research group TRIP because of its accidents, congestion and mediocre maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>Today, work has commenced on developing a variety of thoroughly modern transit features on the highway: a bus rapid transit service, a fast lane for high-occupancy vehicles, an electronic toll system for single-occupant vehicles, and a bike path. Although these features have been spotted throughout the country, they haven\u2019t yet been incorporated into one, individual project.<\/p>\n<p>Commuters are especially pleased. Audrey DeBarros, the executive director of the commuter advocacy group <a href=\"https:\/\/36commutingsolutions.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">36 Commuting Solutions<\/a>, which advocated for the U.S. 36 upgrades, called it \u201ca 21st-century mobility project, not just traditional auto road capacity&#8230; People really do want to be able to bike, to be able to walk places, and not assume that driving in their car is the only way to travel every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1102\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/guest20130702161018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1102\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/guest20130702161018.jpg\" alt=\"Route 36 sign\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/guest20130702161018.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/guest20130702161018-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/guest20130702161018-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/guest20130702161018-75x75.jpg 75w, https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/guest20130702161018-298x298.jpg 298w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1102\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From roadtrafficsigns.com&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadtrafficsigns.com\/highway-road-signs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highway road signs<\/a> department.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Other stakeholders agree. \u201cThis innovative approach is what we\u2019re looking for in the future,\u201d Victor M. Mendez, the head of the Federal Highway Administration, told the New York Times. \u201cIt\u2019s an exciting project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also a time- and cost-intensive project. It will take years to finish the work, and the costs are high. The $312 million first phase of the project is paid for by federal stimulus money, and state and private funds. The project\u2019s second phase will be funded in part by private investors who in return receive a portion of toll revenue, until the year 2063. That mix of private-public funding has raised a few concerns; among them are consumer group U.S. PIRG\u2019s. The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/06\/21\/us\/a-highway-projects-focus-discouraging-driving.html?_r=2&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> that U.S. PIRG\u2019s senior analyst for tax and budget policy, Phineas Baxandall says, \u201cThere are a lot of positive things about this project, but the private financing is essentially just a high-priced loan. From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kenlund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ken Lund<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Aside from funding quandaries, positive expectations surrounding the project were bolstered earlier this week. <i>The Daily Camera<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailycamera.com\/boulder-county-news\/ci_23518655\/u-s-36-travel-pattern-changes-not-dramatic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> that travel along the U.S. 36 is improving: a recently released study (by, incidentally, the 36 Commuting group) reveals a lowered proportion of single drivers and a higher percentage of carpoolers and telecommuters last year over the year before.<\/p>\n<div class=\"related-products\">\n<h3>Like this topic?
