Blame it on driver inattention and blatant <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2013\/03\/18\/dot-speeding-the-leading-cause-of-nyc-traffic-deaths-in-2012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">disregard for red lights and stop signs<\/a>\u2026 or lack of political will. Here\u2019s an account of what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldstopmost.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of the richest cities<\/a> in the world is and isn\u2019t doing about safety of its pedestrians.<\/p>\n<h2>What NYC is doing about pedestrian safety: road redesign &amp; slow zones<\/h2>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Pedestrian-safety-NYC-low\" alt=\"Pedestrians in NYC at risk\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7234\/7287443178_3d1d7daf5e.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pedestrians in NYC are at risk. Image by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/perspective\/7287443178\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elvert Barnes.<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>A 2010 study by the NYC DOT found that most of the pedestrian fatalities and severe injuries that occurred at signalized intersections occurred while the pedestrian was crossing with the signal. This implies that drivers fail to yield to pedestrians, although they must do so under state law. DOT used this information to rank corridors and intersections and took steps like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/slideshow\/data-driven-design-2013\/25684872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4-to-3-lane conversion<\/a> to reduce the chances of pedestrian accidents.<\/p>\n<p>Another law most New Yorkers are unaware of, or fail to comply with: the city\u2019s default speed limit of 30 mph. Pedestrian crashes at unsafe vehicle speeds are twice as deadly as others. DOT\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2013\/05\/16\/neighborhoods-across-nyc-readying-20-mph-slow-zone-applications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Neighborhood Slow Zone<\/a> program, under which a speed limit of 20 mph applies in certain residential areas, has gained popularity for this reason.<\/p>\n<h2>What NYC isn\u2019t doing about pedestrian safety: enforcement<\/h2>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"NYPD-pedestrian-safety-low-priority\" alt=\"NYPD traffic cops should emphasize on pedestrian safety\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2406\/2114334364_b7abb34f4a.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">NYPD should focus more on traffic violators. Image by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/perspective\/2114334364\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elvert Barnes.<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last year, the Bloomberg administration launched the <a href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LOOK!<\/a> campaign, which involved LOOK! pavement markings, reminders on buses, etc. This \u201cis a message to all New Yorkers that safety is in the eye of the beholder and everyone needs to keep an eye out for each other on our streets,\u201d according to DOT commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan.<\/p>\n<p>While such soft measures serve to educate all road users, \u201cwhat we really need, the missing piece is\u2026for the NYPD to enforce traffic laws,\u201d says Noah Budnick, deputy director of nonprofit group Transportation Alternatives. The group points out that last year, the NYPD issued only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/03\/10\/nyregion\/after-a-spate-of-vehicular-deaths-is-it-safe-to-cross-the-road.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">19,119 tickets<\/a> for speeding violations on neighborhood streets, with some precincts not issuing <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2013\/04\/07\/several-nyc-police-precincts-only-issued-a-handful-of-speeding-tickets-last-year-data\/\">any speeding tickets<\/a> at all. So it would seem that of the 3 Es- engineering, education, enforcement\u00a0&#8211; NYC has focused more on the first two.<\/p>\n<h2>A political change of guard could result in improved pedestrian safety<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThese crashes are preventable, and we know how to prevent them\u2014all that&#8217;s left is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crainsnewyork.com\/article\/20130809\/BLOGS04\/130809880\/despite-outcry-pedestrian-fatalities-are-down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">marshaling the political will<\/a> to do so,&#8221; says a Transportation Alternatives spokesman. With mayoral elections around the corner, will there be a change?<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a law that allows NYC to operate 20 speed cameras in school speed zones. This should help law enforcement officials bring down the rate of pedestrian injuries. Mayoral hopeful Bill De Blasio\u2019s Vision Zero plan goes a step further &#8211; it aims for \u201czero fatalities or serious injuries caused by car crashes on the streets of New York.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2013\/09\/16\/a-safer-city-for-all-pedestrians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Impatient New York drivers<\/a> may prove a stumbling block.<\/p>\n<div class=\"related-products\">\n<h3>Like this topic?
