Work Zone Signs

Most work zone signs are orange, the MUTCD color for temporary construction and maintenance. A few related colors show up too: fluorescent pink marks a traffic incident management area (a crash or emergency), while regulatory signs inside the zone — like a work-zone speed limit — stay black-on-white. The orange always signals the temporary work itself.

OSHA requires employers to protect workers and points to the MUTCD for the traffic-control setup — proper advance signs, channelizing devices, and flagging. For night work, signs must be retroreflective so they read under headlights — choose High Intensity or Diamond Grade sheeting — and the work zone itself must be illuminated.
