For bike lanes and on-road facilities where signs need to be visible to both motorists and cyclists, the MUTCD requires all regulatory and warning Bicycle Traffic Signs to be retroreflectorized. While standard Engineer Grade might meet minimums, we strongly recommend using High-Intensity Prismatic (HIP) sheeting or higher, especially for signs critical to safety in bike lanes. HIP grade provides optimal nighttime visibility from various angles, ensuring the sign is clearly seen from a distance by faster-moving vehicles and cyclists alike. Bike Route signs (typically white text on a green background, MUTCD Code D11-1 series) are guide signs used to mark a designated route, trail, or network for cyclists, helping with wayfinding. Bicycle Warning signs (typically black legend/border on a yellow diamond, MUTCD Code W11-1 and others in the W series) are safety signs used to alert all road users (including motorists) of specific hazards related to bicycle traffic, such as an upcoming bicycle crossing, shared lane conditions, or areas where cyclists frequently enter the roadway. When mounting signs exclusively for cyclists and pedestrians on a shared-use path (separate from a roadway with faster vehicle traffic), the recommended mounting height is often lower than for standard roadside traffic signs. According to MUTCD guidelines, the bottom edge of the sign should typically be mounted at a minimum height of 4 feet (1.2 meters) and usually no higher than 5 feet. This ensures it is clearly visible to cyclists and path users without obstructing pedestrian space or becoming a hazard.
